MOD civilian employees and soldiers mark Slovak Armed Forces Day

MOD civilian employees and soldiers gathered on Friday (21 September) at the MOD Club to mark Slovak Armed Forces Day a day ahead of the official celebrations on Saturday (22 September). Before the gathering, they attended an act of commeration at the MOD Appeasement Memorial in memory of all departed Service personnel and employees in Defence.

In his speech on the 25 years of the Slovak Armed Forces, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “While modernization used to be only a word on the paper, today it is real and it is most extensive ever. And we will not slacken our efforts. Indeed, we are committed to doing our utmost to make our young Armed Forces also modern.” The Minister then thanked all professional Servicemen and women for their dedication and service to their homeland, which is not just a job but rather a mission.

In his speech, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko spoke of the four pillars on which the SVK Armed Forces are being built: “The pillars I have in mind are personnel who must be educated and capable of performing tasks, modern assets, challenging and often risky training, and, of course, will, morale and discipline. It is on these four premises that we are building our Armed Forces.”

A day ahead of the official celebrations of Slovak Armed Forces Day in Brezová pod Bradlom, the Minister and the CHOD held a video conference call with Slovak soldiers deployed on missions and operations abroad. They were interested to learn more about latest security developments in the countries as well as how they can help improve their conditions of service outside of Slovakia.
