Defence Ministers Gajdoš and Metnar pay respects to memory of General M. R. Štefánik on eve of 100th anniversary of his tragic death

Slovak Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš and Czech Defence Minister Lubomír Metnar together paid respects to the memory of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik during an Act of Remembrance in Bratislava today (3 May 2019). Already 100 years will have passed this Saturday (4 May 2019) since the tragic death of this native of Košariská.

Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Clearly, General Rastislav Štefánik was a man who through his deeds ultimately left a message to all future generations. His lifes credo was captured in the words: “To Believe – To Love – To Work”. Because only he who believes that can change things for better in a state, loves his native country and works for the benefit of society, can be truly beneficial to the nation.”

Czech Defence Minister Lubomír Metnar said: “Exactly 100 years will have passed tomorrow since Czechoslovakia lost one of the most important architects of modern statehood of the common state. He is an ornament of Slovak and Czech history and an inseparable part of our legionary traditions. Let us honour his memory.”

Head of the SVK defence department also recognised the highly symbolic character of the events Slovakia and the Czech Republic organised last year, to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the common state of Czechs and Slovaks and highlighted the Czech attendance at this year’s commemorative events. “Tomorrow we will together commemorate the 100th anniversary of General Štefániks death also at the National Act of Remembrance at the tomb on Bradlo Hill,” he added and expressed his appreciation for the Czech Air Force’s planned participation in the scheduled flypast over the Tomb of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik on Bradlo Hill.

During Minister Metnar’s official visit to the Slovak Republic, Minister Gajdoš and his counterpart will also meet for talks on cooperation between the counties in the field of defence, joint training and education for service personnel, and the modernization projects of the SVK Army and the SVK Air Force. He will also update the head of the Czech defence department on Slovakia’s performance of its NATO and EU commitments, and they will pay attention to the V4’s joint regional cooperation activities.
