Military Forests and Estates of the Slovak Republic (VLM) has announced that insecticide spraying will be conducted against the calamitous outbreak of Gypsy Moss (Lymantria dispar) in the area of Šenkvický háj throughout May 2019. From 20 up to 50 egg masses have recently been recorded in the area. This means that 10,000 up to 50,000 Gypsy Moss caterpillars can be found on a single oak tree, which, combined with low levels of precipitations, may lead to total destruction of this biotope.
As a result, the state-owned company will spray infected trees with the BIOBIT XL insecticide as part of land-based treatment. BIOBIT XL is a non-chemical, biological and selective insecticide. This means it can only be activated inside the caterpillars’ intestines. Consistent with the provisions of the Natural Environment and Countryside Protection Act, the spraying operations will be carried out individually in discontinuous patches of forest up to 2 ha and there will be no area-wide treatment. The aim of the spraying treatment is to prevent serious and irreversible ecological and society-wide damage to the ecosystem.
The insecticide spraying will commence on 13 May 2019 and is expected to take place over 5 successive days, depending on the concentrations of Gypsy Moss caterpillars. Areas to be treated will be signposted to warn the public and VLM employees will be present at access roads and forest paths leading to the area.
