Today (18 June 2019), State Secretary of the SVK MOD Róbert Ondrejcsák welcomed Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (CEUMC) Gen Claudio Graziano to the Ministry of Defence for bilateral talks. This was his first visit to Slovakia as chairman of the EU’s highest military body at the invitation of CHOD Gen Daniel Zmeko, who participated in the meeting as well.
Partners discussed the current state of play in the EU’s CSDP missions and operations (e.g. EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the training missions in Africa), while underlining their significance for European security.
Also discussed were current themes in the context of new European defence initiatives such as Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) or European Defence Fund (EDF). These were launched by the EU with a view to strengthening the defence capabilities of EU Member States.
Both leaders agreed that it is important to take the existing PESCO projects further down the road. State Secretary Róbert Ondrejcsák emphasised that the participation of third states in PESCO projects should be resolved the sooner the better to avoid misunderstandings among allies.
The two partners also agreed there is a need to keep building European defence capabilities in full complementarity with NATO. Gen Graziano pointed out that the steps the EU is taking in the field of defence are strengthening the European pillar of NATO.
Finally, State Secretary Róbert Ondrejcsák thanked CEUMC General Graziano for the friendly meeting.
