Members of the SVK Cabinet agreed to the Slovak Armed Forces (Amendment) Bill 2019, produced and presented by the Ministry of Defence, with the aim of extending the purposes for which SVK service personnel may be deployed, as Slovakia follows through on its commitments derived from the international agreements it is bound by. Once the Bill has completed its passage through Parliament, the new legislation is expected to come into force on 1 February 2020.
The Slovak Armed Forces (Amendment) Bill 2019 comes as a response to the MOD’s expertise on applied practices and reflects the outcomes of its analyses of the system of State defence, while taking account of current security developments. At the same time, the new Bill details the tasks, use and control of armed forces and the areas of the SVK Government’s and the SVK Ministry of Defence’s responsibility in exercising control of armed forces in line with the already approved Defence of the Slovak Republic (Amendment) Bill 2019.
