6th Captain Edmund Makovník Memorial Competition

The Command, Control and Surveillance (C2S) Wing Zvolen organised the 6th Cpt Edmund Makovník Memorial Competition, a 24-hour basic combat skills competition, in Zvolen on 26-27 September 2019. It takes its name after a long-time member of C2S Wing Zvolen, Cpt Edmund Makovník, who died in a suicide attack on a military convoy in Afghanistan in 2013.

According to CSEL of C2S Wing Zvolen, Sergeant Major Rastislav Skubeň, the aim of the Cpt Edmund Makovník Memorial Competition was to test selected combat skills of individuals and small teams, combined with a fast march across mountainous and forested terrain. This year their fast march took them all the way to ‛Pustý hrad’ (Deserted Castle) overlooking Zvolen.

A series of 13 military stands awaited the competing teams along the way. The teams consisted of a team leader and three members (with a reserve member who could replace one team member at any of the control points with the chief referee’s permission). Each participant carried a backpack, with a minimum required load of 10kg, which was checked at the start and finish lines.

The military stands saw the soldiers’ practical knowledge of marksmanship, tactics, topography, CBRN, military medicine, signals, and engineering put to the test. As timed events, they were tasked with the Model 58 Submachine Gun and Model 82 Pistol disassembly/assembly while being blindfolded and erected the S-65 tents where they stayed overnight. They also administered first aid and negotiated an obstacle course. A military leadership stand was a new addition to the competition this year.

Team Alpha, of the Command Support Company Zvolen, was the best at overcoming the challenges of the competition. Team Alpha was led by 1Lt Denisa Porubiaková, who repeated her victory of 2016, though there was a small change in the team. Her winning team will keep the trophy for a year.
