Soldiers are helping at the site of the tower block gas explosion in Prešov

Soldiers and policemen are ready to assist at the site of the tower block tragedy in Prešov as long as it is necessary. Currently, members of the 2nd Mechanised Brigade Prešov are earmarked for patrolling the area, and military psychologists and chaplains are on the site too.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: "Let me express my sincere condolences to the surviving next of kin and wish those injured a quick recovery. We are here on the site to deal with the requests made by the crisis staff and ensure coordination with other security services. Soldiers from the standby units have been deployed, while multi-role military helicopters have not been used to support the efforts partly due to the adverse weather conditions and partly due to the incident response commander's decision not to call them in for safety reasons." Minister Gajdoš and Deputy Chief of the Crisis Staff Ján Hoľko participated in a meeting of the crisis staff in Prešov.

Soldiers are also prepared to accommodate 55 people in a military accommodation facility and provide 80 field beds in a gymnasium. Military policemen have been involved in regulating local traffic on the site and the Military Hospital in Ružomberok is ready to accept the injured. Also available are military vehicles to transport people or material. Soldiers are also ready to assist firefighters in clearing debris from the site. All requests from the crisis staff are handled immediately.
