Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď today met with representatives of the UN - VETERAN SLOVAKIA Civic Association at the Ministry of Defence to discuss ways of supporting and developing cooperation with the Association. They paid close attention to how the MOD can contribute to taking the quality of the Association's work towards the wellbeing of veterans, including serving and ex-service personnel, to a higher level.
Reflecting on SVK peacekeepers in the service of the UN, the head of the MOD said: “27 years have already passed since the first deployment of SVK service personnel of the independent Slovak Republic on missions under the umbrella of the United Nations. Over this period, they have become a stable and recognised element of international teams in which together in blue berets they performed tasks or are still performing tasks to benefit peace and security. For this, they deserve our respect and thanks.” On this occasion, he expressed his support to the Association and praised the fact that the Association aims to create material conditions for better life of socially and physically disadvantaged ex-UN peacekeepers in Slovakia.
There are currently 463 SVK Armed Forces personnel engaged in missions and operations abroad. As part of international crisis management, 19,500 SVK soldiers have swapped duties on rotational deployments to date. As of today, the MOD registers 8,016 contemporary veterans and 98 WW2 veterans.
The aim of the UN - VETERAN SLOVAKIA Civic Association is to bring together SVK citizens who have served on UN peacekeeping missions and those who are committed to supporting them. The Association is fully engaged with government departments and non-governmental organisations in the Slovak Republic, including with the SVK MOD.
