Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers commit to supporting and cooperating with NATO Force Integration Unit Slovakia

The NATO Force Integration Unit Slovakia (NFIU SVK) is a vital contribution to SVK security and NATO's collective defence, Minister of Defence Jaroslav Naď and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Ivan Korčok confirmed at today's press conference after visiting the NFIU SVK in Bratislava. Also present at the meeting with Commander NFIU SVK Col Peter Brauner was State Secretary of the SVK Ministry of Defence. On this occasion, they committed to cooperating closely with the NFIU.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The Slovak Republic is a stable and responsible member of the Alliance. We are an active partner, not just a consumer of the membership benefits. That is why I am pleased to say that already today we have found several areas where we can start cooperating more closely than ever before.”

On the role of the NFIU, the head of the MOD underlined that the NFIU, based at Vajnory Barracks, is no military base, nor does it serve to facilitate the deployment of NATO weapons and assets across the Slovak Republic. “In the event of a threat of aggression, its mission is to make sure that Slovakia can manage the reception, staging, onward movement and integration (RSOI) of Allied forces in order to strengthen our armed forces in defence of the Slovak Republic,” he explained.

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Ivan Korčok said: “The presence of the [NATO Force] Integration Unit in Slovakia proves that our Allies will come to help defend our State in the case of crisis. Slovakia's membership in NATO means a level of security and stability that no other alternative can provide.” Minister Korčok highly appreciated the active involvement of NFIU members in the education and communication activities aimed at promoting the importance of NATO membership for SVK security. He also expressed his interest in promoting intense cooperation with the NFIU.

Commander NFIU SVK Col Peter Brauner was highly appreciative of the interest both Ministers showed in the Unit. Members of the NFIU SVK took the opportunity to present the Unit's mission, structure, main tasks and the extent of cooperation with the SVK Armed Forces, the SVK Ministry of Defence and the SVK Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Our reciprocal collaboration markedly contributes to the mission of the NATO Force Integration Unit in Slovakia.

The NFIU in Slovakia was officially activated on 1 September 2016 and attained its Full Operational Capability (FOC) on 1 June 2017. It comes under the command of the Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE) in Szczecin, Poland. The NFIU SVK is staffed by 41 specialists, of whom 21 are SVK Armed Forces members. In peacetime, the NFIU aims to identify logistical and transport options and support infrastructure, as well as assisting in organising Allied exercises.
