Employees of state-run company Military Forests and Estates Kežmarok Branch have recently restocked fish in the Levoča Hills watercourses. They have released 12,000 pieces of Salmo trutta morpha fario, known as "stream trout" in Slovakia, into local rivers and streams to replenish populations.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: "Caring for the environment is one of the global challenges. I am very pleased that our Military Forests and Estates gives a helping hand and does its fair bit, among others, by restocking fish species in watercourses. In this way, it contributes to greater biodiversity of managed areas and keeping valuable water ecosystems in favourable condition." As he explained, in looking after the environment, Military Forests and Estates covers a range of activities, from forestation to caring for hunting districts.
The Levoča Hills fisheries district managed by Military Forests and Estates includes: Torysa River, Jakubianka Beck, Ľubický Stream, Holumnický Stream, Kolačkovský Stream and Lomnický Stream. The restocking activity went ahead according to the fish restocking plan in line with the Fisheries Act. The released juvenile trouts were 8cm in length and weighed 2-3g. The trout stock was purchased from the Fish Gene Pool Centre Východná, Tatra National Park (TANAP). Similarly, Military Forests and Estates works towards fish stock preservation across the fisheries districts managed by the company branches in Záhorie, Lešť and Vihorlat.
