SVK soldiers have worked towards peace and security in the world for past 27 years already

Members of the SVK Armed Forces have participated in accomplishing joint UN tasks and goals since the emergence of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993, hence working towards peace and security in the world. Currently, 243 SVK servicemen and women are deployed on peacekeeping missions under the UN umbrella.
Reflecting on the occasion, Defence Ministry Jaroslav Naď said: “Today, we commemorate together International Day of UN Peacekeepers. Through their resolve and commitment to their daily service duties to the benefit of peace and security for the past 27 years, our servicemen and women have demonstrated that they are a well-respected and inherent part of international teams.” In connection with this year's theme of the international day – Women in Peacekeeping Forces, SVK servicewomen, too, are represented in the ranks of UN peacekeepers. Furthermore, he paid his respects to the SVK Armed Forces members who have lost their lives in the line of duty. “Never ever will we forget our Service members who have not made it home to their close ones. We honour their memory,” he added.
Today, 241 SVK Armed Forces members, of whom 25 are servicewomen, are serving with UNFICYP, while two servicemen are serving with UNTSO in the Middle East.
Established in 1945, the United Nations (UN) is an international organisation made up of 193 states that have committed themselves to preserving international peace and security, fostering friendly relations among nations, and supporting social progress, better living conditions and human rights. A total of 72 UN peacekeeping missions have evolved around the world since their onset in 1948. Currently, 13 peacekeeping missions are active. Since its establishment Slovakia has so far joined 17 UN peacekeeping missions, with the participation of over 11,000 SVK Armed Forces members.
