Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď received the Diplomatic Service representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Kazakhstan at the Ministry of Defence today. Central themes of both meetings included the current situation in the field of defence and security, the experience with COVID-19 containment and the MOD’s priorities, including the continuing modernisation of the SVK Armed Forces and ways to strengthen bilateral ties.
During their first meeting since coming into office, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Slovakia Mr Nicos P. Nicolaou appreciated the relations between both countries that go over and above the standard expected and the mutual cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Highlighting the SVK military’s collaborative efforts, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Through the Slovak Air Force, for example, we ensured repatriation flights for citizens both from Cyprus and from Slovakia. As well as working together during the pandemic, our 19-year-long participation in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Cyprus is a remarkable example of our cooperation.” He added that 241 SVK service personnel are currently deployed to Cyprus in order to secure the integrity of the buffer zone and keep the military balance on the island.
Still today, the head of the SVK MOD met with Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Slovakia Mr Roman Vasilenko. During their initial meeting, they discussed recent developments and the MOD’s priorities, and reviewed the potential for cooperation, with the domestic defence industry as a stakeholder. Minister Naď updated Ambassador Vasilenko on the status of work on the new strategic documents. “I hope in the future we will find such areas of common interest which will strengthen the deepening of cooperation between both countries, as an intergovernmental agreement on military technical cooperation was signed for this purpose in the past,” said the head of the SVK MOD.
Following the meetings with the Ambassadors of Cyprus and Kazakhstan, also today, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď met with SVK Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway Ms Denisa Frelichová. They mainly spoke about the potential areas of cooperation on exchanging experience from command and control (C2) of military operations and combating disinformation. They appreciated the intense cross-border engagement between both countries and agreed to further deepen the bilateral relations in the sphere of security and defence.
