Ministry of Defence assists Kapišová village in moving historical exhibits – two T-34 tanks

Through the Institute of Military History, two T-34 tanks have been on loan from the SVK Ministry of Defence in Kapišová, a village in eastern Slovakia.  Being the symbols of the battles waged as part of the Carpatho-Dukla Operation in 1944, they were, until recently, set up in a field which falls within the village′s cadastral boundary. With the technical assistance provided by members of the CSS Battalion Prešov, the T-34 tanks have been moved to the recently refurbished centre of the village.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “It is immensely important that we are not just familiar with the events of our military history, but also commemorate them with due respect. That′s why I am pleased that the village of Kapišová has come up with the proposal to move the tanks of the Institute of Military History from the field to a dignified place in the centre of the village.” In this way, the MOD wants to bring landmark events of Slovak military history, including the events of the Carpatho-Dukla Operation, closer to the public, he added.

According to Mayor of Kapišová Pavol Fek, the village council backed the proposal to place the historical exhibits in the newly reconstructed village square by a unanimous vote, and so did the residents who voiced their agreement with the proposal in a public meeting. “We want to build a rest zone with an information office and install external lighting and a security camera system,” he saidHe went on to thank the Institute of Military History and the SVK Armed Forces for their help. “The village lacked financial resources for the movement. That′s why we are thankful to soldiers for their help, they′ve done a great job,” he said.

Col Miloslav Čaplovič, Director of the Institute of Military History, said: “These tanks are held in the collections of the Institute of Military History, although they have been moved with the technical assistance of the SVK Armed Forces. In doing so, military technicians released their breaks and rendered their gear inoperative, so that they could be pulled and transported to their new place.” He added that the tanks are the items of the Dukla battlefield military open air museum and were originally put on display in the field throughout the 1960s and 1970s as a symbol of heavy battles waged in the years 1944 - 1945. According to his words, they will continue to symbolise the remarkable events of military history in the region of north-eastern Slovakia.
