Ex Fire Rescue without international participation this year due to COVID-19

A Defence Fire Service (DFS) exercise, dubbed Fire Rescue 2020, is being hosted at the Training Centre Lešť on 5-9 October 2020. Due to the COVID-19 measures in place, the exercise has been scaled back. Notably absent from the exercise are the traditional participants from the Czech Armed Forces, Office of SVK Armed Forces Surgeon General, Medical Rescue Service Bratislava and students of Banská Bystrica-based Medical School acting as mock casualties.

With many of the restrictions in place to prevent the spread of the virus on Fire Rescue 2020, Exercise Director Lt Col Róbert Senček, of SVK Air Force HQ Zvolen, said: “The exercise is, therefore, being attended by members of the SVK Air Force’s Defence Fire Service only. The main objective of the exercise is to coordinate and practise the actions of firefighting teams in carrying out specialist activities and rescue works during incident responses.”

The training audience at the Training Centre Lešť includes members of the DFS teams from the Transport Wing Kuchyňa, Tactical Wing Sliač, Helicopter Wing Prešov, Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Nitra and Air Operations Control Brigade Zvolen. Among others, they are practising and deepening the commanders’ abilities to command and control incident responses, set up an incident response staff and coordinate the DFS units in the aftermath of an air disaster, aircraft fire, building fire and mass casualty event.

In various scenarios, the firefighters faced a multi-storey building fire, where they practised rescuing people through a narrow space with the aid of a specialist evacuation rescue system; an aircraft crash in a residential area; a lorry accident at a railway crossing with a leak of flammable liquid and a chemical threat.

Lt Col Róbert Senček and Chief Firefighter of the SVK Air Force Cpt Ján Leško added that, due to the current situation, they focused on better integration of new members into the DFS teams. The exercise aimed to align the actions of individual firefighting teams who often intervene side by side to ensure the safety of SVK Air Force assets and play a role in domestic crisis management operations. Despite the COVID-19 restrictions in place, Ex Fire Rescue 2020 met its objectives.
