Defence Minister J. Naď holds talks in UAE on areas of cooperation and opportunities for SVK defence industry

On his trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď met with UAE Minister of State for Defence Affairs His Excellency Mohammed Al Bawardi and UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. They concurred that stability, security and peaceful co-existence is the basis of prosperity and economic development, with the fight against terrorism being the greatest security challenge.

During today’s official talks, potential areas of SVK-UAE security and defence cooperation and the reconfirmation of Slovakia’s interest in deepening ties with the UAE Ministry of Defence and the UAE Armed Forces were taken up as a matter of priority. The meeting with the UAE Minister of State for Defence Affairs served as an occasion for presenting the SVK MOD’s key priorities for 2020-2024, including, notably, the drafting of new strategic documents, Armed Forces modernisation, and defence spending hikes. The SVK military’s country-wide response to the COVID-19 pandemic was another topic on the agenda.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “In the Persian Gulf region, the United Arab Emirates is a significant partner with positive leverage on the stability of this region. Our bilateral relations in the field of security and defence are dynamic and flexible and we want to see this trend continue on its course. Today’s visit is a signal for this too. I strongly believe Slovakia and our domestic defence industry have much to offer to the world.” Minister Naď noted that this spirit of cooperation can bolster the defence capabilities of both countries.

Alongside mutual support for defence industry, to his partners the head of the SVK MOD presented opportunities for cooperation on military training at the specialised Training Centre Lešť and offered recreational stays for UAE military personnel at the SVK MOD-run spa and rehabilitation centre in Piešťany.

According to Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, another signal for a further deepening of partnership might be the Agreement between the Government of the Slovak Republic and the Government of the United Arab Emirates on Mutual Protection of Classified Information. The head of the MOD appreciated an invitation to participate in the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) to be held in February 2021 in Abu Dhabi and offered a reciprocal invitation to his partners to attend IDEB 2021 in Bratislava.
