SVK Military Forests and Estates receives over €5 million in funding for flood projects

State-owned SVK Military Forests and Estates has received non-repayable financial support in the amount of €5,073,500.41 million from the Ministry of Environment to build permanent flood defences on the River Malina and the Balážov Stream.

Director General of SVK Military Forests and Estates Ján Jurica said: “Thanks to the funds, it will be possible to lower the risk of flooding for the residents of Malacky and to protect State property in this area, which is under the remit of SVK Military Forests and Estates.”

Non-repayable financial support in the amount of €2,518,222.18 has been awarded for the flood project on the River Malina with total project costs at €2,798,024.64, and €2,555,278.23 for the flood project on the Balážov Stream with total project costs at €2,839,198.03.

The success of the state-run company, falling under the remit of the Ministry of Defence, was appreciated by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď who had recently visited the site in person. Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “For us in Defence, the protection and safety of residents comes first, even in this way. I am sure that, like myself, all residents in this location will appreciate the efforts of Military Forests and Estates.”

Alongside reconstructing the existing structures, green measures aimed at building islands for nests of local birds and a lagoon for amphibian species and at raising the bottom to support the aquaculture community will be implemented, whereas as part of the works, two areas will be separated from the existing ponds by dykes to help regenerate alder tree vegetation.

MOD-run, state-owned SVK Military Forests and Estates has built permanent flood defences in the area, including 11 flood polders (flood water retention basins) and 230 technical and biotechnical measures.
