Military Forests and Estates offers grant aid to beekeepers in their most difficult year in past 30 years

State-owned, MOD-run SVK Military Forests and Estates (VLM) has made a financial contribution to the Slovak beekeepers who kept bees across the military woodlands in 2020. Based on the Memorandum of Cooperation between the SVK Beekeepers Association and SVK Military Forests and Estates SOE, a total of €7,340 in grant aid has been distributed to 24 beekeepers.

Given that, for beekeepers, 2020 was the most difficult year in the past 30 years, the recipients welcomed the financial support with gratitude. "We are fully aware of the importance of bees for sustaining biodiversity and a functional ecosystem in Defence, which is evidenced by the presence of beehives at the Ministry of Defence. That's why I am delighted that the Military Forests and Estates views the environment it manages as a whole and that it takes good care of all aspects of the military woodlands. Through the grants, they've given a helping hand to the beekeepers so as to overcome their difficulties during these challenging times," said Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď in appreciation of VLM's initiative.

As VLM Director General Ján Jurica said, the beekeepers who have received the grant aid are members of different beekeepers associations registered in Slovakia. Alongside restoring beehives, the grants will go towards purchasing new beekeeping equipment and tools, honeycombs, bee food, bee medicines, fences and beekeeping aids. The financial aid was transferred from the SVK Beekeepers Association's transparent bank account into the beekeepers' bank accounts on 16 March 2021.
