Minister J. Naď: M. R. Štefánik's legacy remains universal and inspirational even over 100 years on since his death and our mission is to keep it alive

General Štefánik's personal motto “To Believe – To Love – To Work” and legacy of his life and achievements remain universal and inspirational even 102 years on since his tragic death, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said in the presence of Prime Minister Eduard Heger during today's remembrance ceremony at the Tomb of M. R. Štefánik in Ivanka pri Dunaji.

Speaking on the occasion, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Despite his early tragic death, General Štefánik left behind his remarkable and changeless message on the unceasing struggle for freedom, democracy and denial of totalitarian regimes. Our mission is to keep his legacy alive. General Štefánik's zeal for serving his country and willingness to sacrifice his life to the benefit of the good and future make him a role model in genuine patriotism for current generations.”

In his remarks, the head of the MOD went over Štefánik's major contributions. Among them, the emergence of Czechoslovakia as a common state of Czechs and Slovaks stands out. This was largely thanks to his key role in rallying the Czechoslovak resistance support for the Allied Powers by forming the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia, Italy and France in WW1.

General Milan Rastislav Štefánik perished on Sunday morning of 4 May 1919. On approach to landing, the plane of the first and last Czechoslovak Minister of War went down suddenly near Ivanka pri Dunaji. The entire crew died in the crash of the Caproni Ca.33 biplane.
