Military History Museum Piešťany unveils new permanent exhibition titled “Slovaks in Uniforms 1848-2020”

The Institute of Military History – Military History Museum Piešťany has unveiled a new permanent exhibition titled “Slovaks in Uniforms 1848-2020”. The exhibition of past and contemporary uniforms was opened today by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď along with Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer, Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko and Director of the Institute of Military History Col Miloslav Čaplovič. On this occasion, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď announced that the MOD is preparing new and modern uniforms for service personnel.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “I am pleased to see that the pandemic has not stopped employees of the Military History Museum from designing and staging new exhibitions for visitors. I immensely value their work, because they preserve the memories of our history. I believe the new exhibition will increase the relatively high visitor interest which our military museums enjoy.”

On the same occasion, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď spoke about the MOD's plans to provide new uniforms for service personnel, he said: “Members of the SVK Armed Forces deserve new uniforms to reflect all features of our armed forces' traditions and history, not the ones that are the legacy of the military advisors who came here some time after the 2nd World War and showed us what our soldiers should look like. We have our own history.”

As Director of the Institute of Military History Col Miloslav Čaplovič explained, the new exhibition maps out Slovakia's military past since the Slovak Uprising of 1848 to present when our military past, present and future is formed by members of the Slovak Armed Forces. “This is the fourth exhibition to open to the public. It aims to show four main military milestones on which our military traditions are based – the Slovak Uprising of 1848, the 1st Czechoslovak resistance movement, the 2nd Czechoslovak resistance movement, and the contemporary armed forces and peace support and stabilisation operations in the world,” he added.

Thanks to the new permanent exhibition, visitors to the museum will, for the first time, get to view over 300 interesting small-sized objects from 22 collections of the Military Museum. These were until recently stored in the depositories of the Military History Museums Piešťany and Svidník. The exhibition is enriched by other exhibits of cultural value from private collections owned by history lovers.

The “Slovaks in Uniforms 1848-2020” Permanent Exhibition is located in the new exhibition premises of the H-1 Historical Hangar at the Military History Museum Piešťany. Throughout May and June, all components of the Institute of Military History will open to the public.

The MOD is preparing the design documentation for the construction of a new exhibition hall at the Military History Museum Piešťany to house exhibits from 1945 to present.
