Today (17 May 2021), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď welcomed the Ambassador of Japan to Slovakia, His Excellency Makoto Nakagawa to the Ministry of Defence as part of his first official visit to the MOD in the role of the Ambassador of Japan to Slovakia. They had a discussion about potential areas of cooperation that could be developed between the countries in the field of defence and security, as well as addressing political developments on the international scene.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Our common visions, goals and value pillars, which are the main driving force for multilateral cooperation, bind us not only with our Euro-Atlantic partners, but also with the partners who sign up to such values and support them. Therefore, in building cooperation and developing mutual ties in the field of defence and security, the geographical distance is no barrier.” He added that, although having no bilateral defence agreement, both countries can see there is a space for cooperation, for example, in support of their domestic defence industry.
During the meeting, the head of the MOD briefed the Japanese Ambassador on the MOD's ambitions and plans for modernising the SVK military's aging equipment and for leveraging effective change to Service conditions for military personnel. There was also a space to discuss the new SVK strategic defence and security documents and defence spending in keeping with Slovakia's international commitments.
