At today's act of commemoration at the Bulgarian Citizens Memorial in Bratislava's Vajanský Square, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer paid tribute to the Bulgarian citizens who lost their lives in the liberation of Slovakia in WW2. The commemorative event coincided with the Day of Hristo Botev and those fallen for Bulgaria's freedom and independence.
Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “Today we paid homage to the Bulgarian fighters who lost their lives in Slovakia's national liberation struggle in the Second World War. With their sights on freedom and better future, they waged battles in our country against a common enemy, and, sadly, many of them never made it back home. We honour their memory.”
Bulgarian students, gardeners and farm workers joined the operations against the German occupation forces and against the pro-Nazi regime in Slovakia. They did so in the ranks of the Nitra-based Partisan Brigade, the Jánošík Brigade (part of M. R. Štefánik Partisan Group), and other partisan groups operating at Kríž nad Hronom, Handlová, Kremnica, Banská Bystrica, Martin and in other places across Slovakia. Many of them died in action.
