258 military personnel return home from Latvia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Mediterranean, Cyprus, and Bosnia and Herzegovina

258 members of the Slovak Armed Forces have recently returned home from different international crisis management missions and operations. Today (2 July 2021), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko thanked them for a job well done during the official homecoming ceremony held at 12 Mechanised Battalion in Nitra.

The ceremony marked the homecoming of soldiers recently returned from tours of duty with NATO's enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Latvia, the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in Syria, Op EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, Op EUFOR-ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNFICYP in Cyprus, and the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan.

On SVK deployments, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Looking at the locations where our soldiers have been deployed on UN, EU and NATO missions and operations, it is clear that the Slovak Armed Forces have been contributing to prosperity and peace all over the world. This attests to Slovakia being firmly anchored in the Euro-Atlantic structures.” He offered his respect and thanks to them as they and their service put Slovakia in the position of a respected ally and partner in the world.

On military families, Defence Minister Naď said: “The soldier's job is a service to the country and this profession is borne by every soldier and his or her close ones. I know it is far from easy. For this reason, I wish to express my thanks not only to our soldiers, but also to their loved ones for their sacrifices they must make. The merits of soldiers are also their merits.”

Speaking in appreciation of our soldiers' achievements abroad, Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “Wherever you served, you undertook tasks in different places of the world and in different conditions with different threat levels, and with a full commitment and sincere efforts to see your missions through to accomplishment. And all this against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the unstable security situation. Nevertheless, you delivered a high standard of excellence in your profession, as reported by our foreign partners during our talks.”

Gen Daniel Zmeko thanked soldiers and their families for their composure and resilience, even in demanding situations. “Unexpectedly, for many of you, the pandemic prolonged your tours of duty abroad. For this, I want to express my gratitude not only to you, but also to your loved ones who supported you and realised that the soldier's job was not just a profession, but also a mission, and that sacrifices had to be made often, just like in one's own personal life.”

Due to the pandemic restrictions in place, the official homecoming ceremony with the participation of family members could take place only some time after the soldiers' return home.
