Minister Naď commemorates memory of Slovak National Uprising heroes at Jankov vŕšok

Today (28 August 2021), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď commemorated the memory of the Slovak National Uprising heroes who lost their lives in the Second World War during a ceremony at Jankov vŕšok. On this occasion, he emphasised the importance of commemoration events and the timeless importance of universal values our society must protect.

Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “On the occasion of the upcoming 77th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising, we are visiting different parts of Slovakia to pay homage to our heroes who showed their courageous face at an uneasy time and stood up against evil in the form of the Nazi regime. We will never forget their heroism and it is with great respect we remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the fighting.”

The Ján Žižka Partisan Brigade, led by Col Teodor Pola, operated around the village of Uhrovec during WW2. The partisans built a network of bunkers there. In one of them, seven wounded partisans were burnt to death by Nazi troops on 13 December 1944. There, the construction works on the SNP Memorial – Tomb were completed in 1951, when the site hosted the 1st SNP commemoration event.
