Alexander Dubček Memorial unveiling ceremony attended by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď participated in an unveiling ceremony for the Alexander Dubček Memorial at the University of Trenčín today. The Memorial, dedicated to this extraordinary politician and advocate of human rights and humanism, was unveiled to mark the centenary of Dubček's birthday.

Speaking on the occasion, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: ”Alexander Dubček was a leading personality of the Prague Spring and is one of the most striking and prominent personalities of our contemporary history. Commonly referred to as socialism with a human face, Dubček's democratic reforms embraced the values of social justice, democracy and freedom. I am convinced that this Memorial will be a permanent reminder of his pursuit of justice, truth and humanity for both students and members of the public.”

The head of the MOD appreciated the personal presence of Pavol Dubček, Alexander Dubček's son, as well as his remarks promoting social values as the basis of moral resilience. “Building resilience against inhumane regimes, injustice and different forms of social oppression – these are true and timeless words,” added the Minister.

Alexander Dubček was born in 1921 in Uhrovec. In 1939, he secretly joined the Communist Party and illegal resistance to the wartime Slovak State. In 1968, he rose to become the First Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and worked towards liberalising the Communist regime.
