A total of 236 Slovak service personnel have returned home on successful completion of their tours of duty abroad. Today, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer, Secretary General of the MOD's Service Office, and senior generals honoured the returning troops in a homecoming ceremony held at the Training and Mobilisation Manning Base Martin.
Having served tours of duty abroad, 212 military personnel have returned from UNFICYP in Cyprus, 17 from Op ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 4 from EUTM in Mali, 2 from EUTM in the Republic of Central Africa, and 1 military observer from UNTSO in the Middle East.
Addressing the returning troops, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer thanked them for representing our country abroad, saying: “During your deployment in a variety of demanding conditions, including the climate ones, you were faced with a large number of challenging tasks and got a huge amount of work done at 100% and to the satisfaction of all of us. We receive only words of praise and appreciation for our servicemen and women, which proves that, although the current situation is complicated, the quality and determination of our service members is very high.” Mr Majer expressed his strong belief that their wealth of experience from operations will be motivational in the next stage of their careers. He also remembered to thank the families of the soldiers for their support.
Addressing the gathered troops on behalf of SVK Armed Forces Command, Commander of the Strategic Crisis Management Centre at the Defence Staff Brig Tibor Králik said: “You have joined the over 34,000-strong force of SVK servicemen and women who have, over the past 28 years, represented not only themselves and the Armed Forces, but, above all, the Slovak Republic. Preparing and training security forces in sub-Saharan Africa as much as enforcing peace and stability in Cyprus, in the Western Balkans and in the Middle East are our common contributions to international stability as part of EU and UN operations and missions. In all those places, you have risen to the challenges of operational tasks in an exemplary manner, whilst operating in a variety of conditions with different levels of threat, yet still always with utmost commitment and sincere effort.”
428 SVK military personnel, of whom 36 are servicewomen, are currently serving on international crisis management missions and operations. A total of 34,108 SVK Armed Forces service personnel, including 642 servicewomen, have completed tours of duty abroad to date.
