Slovak Armed Forces service personnel and MOD civilian staff remembered their departed colleagues in an All Souls Day Ceremony of Homage and Remembrance at the Reconciliation Memorial at the Ministry of Defence in Bratislava today.
Reflecting on the occasion, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “All Souls Day is about remembering all our close ones. For us, this also means remembering members of our Defence family – we pledge never to forget our Service personnel and colleagues who have laid down their lives in the line of duty to the benefit of our homeland – the Slovak Republic. We honour their memory.”
Among those who paid their respects to the memory of their departed colleagues by laying a wreath and lighting up a candle was Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko. “Our thoughts go out to those side by side with whom we no longer can serve our country. It was a great honour to have served with you, thank you for your sacrifice, and we vow never to forget,” said Gen Zmeko at the Reconciliation Memorial, which contains vials of soil from the battlefields where our soldiers died or the cemeteries where they were buried.
Also today, MOD and Armed Forces leaders visited the MOD Hall of Fame to light up candles for 58 Service personnel who have died on operations abroad.
