Armed Forces to significantly scale back training in coming period

In view of the measures adopted following the declaration of the state of emergency and the deployment of military personnel and resources in support of hospitals and police forces, based on Government decisions, the Armed Forces are to significantly scale back their exercises and training in the coming period. Yet, the scheduled international training activities with the participation of the Slovak armed forces in Ex Combined Resolve XVI in Germany and the rotation of SVK troops in the Baltics with a training exercise in Poland will still go ahead.

Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko said: “The Armed Forces have accomplished their main training tasks this year. We have managed to catch up with the backlog of training exercises from last year, and we are going to complete the planned programme of international exercises, such as the deployment of 11 Mechanised Battalion on Ex Combined Resolve XVI in Germany and the rotation of our troops in the Baltics with a training exercise in Poland. The latest measures which have been adopted following the declaration of the state of emergency and which rely on the assumption that a substantial engagement of forces and resources will be required in the fight against the pandemic have led us to scale back exercises and training, so we need to be ready for this eventuality and take on assigned tasks.”

In the coming period, an extensive element of the SVK Army along with vehicles and equipment will be participating in Ex Combined Resolve XVI in Germany, to test their interoperability with Allied units. Moreover, the SVK Army is just beginning an overland movement as part of this rotation of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia. This will mark the first operational deployment for the newest Zuzana 2 Self-propelled Gun Howitzers. While en route to Latvia, our troops along with their equipment will take part in a training exercise with US and Polish artillery units on Orzysz Training Area in Poland.
