CEDC and WB defence ministers reaffirm their interest in forging cooperation in areas of common interest

In a video conference today (15 December 2021), Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) and Western Balkans (WB) defence ministers met to tackle defence and security challenges at this time of the pandemic in an effort to strengthen their regional cooperation with the EU and to foster an insightful understanding of current issues in the European Union.

Speaking of Pristina's representation at today's CEDC meeting, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “This was namely because the subject of the video conference was linked to the themes existentially common to all the countries of the region. Take the negative phenomena associated with the pandemic such as polarisation and radicalisation of society, for example. The answer to this lies in the responsiveness of governments by way of early assistance and a show of solidarity. Building the resilience of society to hybrid threats occupies an important place in the ranking of societal goals.”

The head of the MOD reaffirmed Slovakia's support for the integration of the WB countries into the European Union, saying: “This is one of the most successful instruments in supporting reforms and reinforcing peace, stability and democracy in our geopolitical region.”

Another theme on the agenda of the CEDC meeting was the EU's Strategic Compass. Ministers appreciated the process of drafting the document. According to Mr Naď, the final version should be a healthily ambitious and action-oriented document, one which will reflect the reality – the deliverables achievable in terms of required resources and timelines. As part of today's video conference, CEDC defence ministers discussed improving the EU's rapid reaction capacity, streamlining the decision-making processes in crisis management operations, and the progress being made in fielding new technologies.

At the conclusion of the CEDC meeting, a joint CEDC declaration was adopted to demonstrate strong support for EU-NATO cooperation and for the prosperity of the WB countries.
