Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer received Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Slovakia, His Excellency Mr Toomas Kukk at the Ministry of Defence today (23 February 2022). The security developments in Ukraine and Europe as well as Slovak-Estonian defence and security cooperation were the themes of their discussion.
Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “Slovakia will always be the supporter of Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. The Russian Federation should be in no doubt that any military aggression against Ukraine will be met with serious consequences. We stand united on this issue across the entirety of the Alliance and we will react just the same.“
Mr Majer went on to inform that the Slovak Republic has gifted a Božena mine clearance system and medical supplies worth €1.7m to Ukraine.
He reiterated the need for de-escalation of tensions in the interests of continuing constructive dialogue. In the context of the situation in Ukraine and hybrid operations close to the borders of the Baltic states and Poland, Ambassador Kukka thanked for the Slovak contribution to NATO's enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Latvia, which forms a vital part of the Alliance's defence and deterrence and is a clear sign of Allied unity. In response to last week's NATO Defence Ministerial in Brussels on strengthening the Alliance's eastern flank, he noted that Slovakia will consider the possibility of stationing an Allied unit within Slovak territory.
According to Mr Majer, Slovakia and Estonia tend to have similar or very close positions on issues of transatlantic cooperation. Alongside multilateral fora, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer sees several new areas of bilateral cooperation, for example, joint training at Slovak military facilities. Mr Majer noted there is also space for bolstered Slovak-Estonian collaboration on military education between the General M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy (AOS) in Liptovský Mikuláš and the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) in Tart.
Deputy Defence Minister Majer asked for Estonian know-how on the implementation of the U.S.-Estonian Defense Cooperation Agreement, which was signed in 2017 and on the basis of which Estonian defence infrastructure received funding from the USA.
