Director General of the MOD's Human Resources Department Martin Jakál visited Military Repair Company Nováky (VOP Nováky), to attend a remembrance ceremony for the eight employees who died in the blast that ripped through the company's munitions decommissioning facility 15 years ago.
Speaking at the Nováky Tragedy Memorial, Director General Mr Jakál said: "Some of the wounds caused by this tragic event will not heal in time. Years have passed since one of the worst industrial accidents in the history of Slovakia occurred, but the memory of those who lost their most precious lives will never disappear. We honour their memory."
A series of detonations rocked the company's munitions decommissioning facility on 2 March 2007, claiming the lives of eight employees and injuring dozens of others on site at the time. Immediately after the disaster, the MOD adopted extra safety precautions to minimise potential risks and failures. In 2012, VOP Nováky was leased to a private company for a period of 20 years.
