Russia's Attack on Ukraine Information Update as of 3 March 2022

UKRAINE:
- At least four strong explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Thursday night, but it was not immediately clear what they had hit.
- Russian forces have taken control of Kherson, the head of the regional government confirmed. It is the first large city to be taken by Russian forces since attacking Ukraine. "The (Russian) occupiers are in all parts of the city and are very dangerous," he said.
- Despite intense shelling by Russian troops, Kharkov, Chernihiv and Mariupol are still in Ukrainian hands, the UK Ministry of Defence has said.
- According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the main body of the Russian military convoy which is advancing to Kyiv is still more than 30 km from the capital. It has been slowed down by Ukrainian resistance and mechanical failures.
- Ukrainian troops shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-30 fighter over the city of Irpin.
- So far, 9,000 Russians have died in fighting in Ukraine and Russia has lost 217 tanks, 900 armoured fighting vehicles and 30 aircraft, the Ukrainian Defence Staff has reported.
- In his statement, President Zelenskyy said: “We are a nation that broke the enemy's plans in a week – plans that have been built for years, treacherously, deliberately, with hatred of our country, of our people, of any people who have heart and freedom.” He also highlighted the heroic resistance of Ukrainian troops and population against the Russian invaders. According to him, Russians are just „confused and abused children".
- According to the UN, almost 230 civilians, including 15 children, have died since the beginning of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. However, it is believed the actual numbers may be even higher.
- Ukraine is reporting more deaths after air strikes in various parts of the country, including 8 victims in Izyum where a residential building was hit.
- 1,000,000 people have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has confirmed.
- The Russian and Ukrainian delegations are scheduled to meet for a second round of talks today.
WORLD:
- The International Criminal Court in The Hague has opened an investigation into alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Ukraine, which may have been committed since 2013. The investigation will also address the conflict that erupted in Ukraine after Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine. 39 countries, including Slovakia, have submitted a request to the ICC to investigate the situation in Ukraine.
- In response to V. Putin placing its nuclear deterrence forces on high alert, the USA has cancelled a planned test of its nuclear ballistic missile to avoid “any actions that could be misunderstood or misconstrued” during heightened tensions with Russia.
- The World Bank has announced that it is suspending all its ongoing projects in Russia and Belarus
- The OVD-Info human rights group reported that Russian police had detained a total of 782 people during anti-war protests in 34 Russian cities the day before. Among the detainees was a well-known 77-year-old Russian activist who was led out of the crowd while holding anti-war posters
- Germany will send 2,700 anti-aircraft Strela missiles to Ukraine to defend against Russian forces
- France has called on its citizens to leave Russia unless their presence in the country is essential
- The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to vote on a resolution on nuclear safety in Ukraine at an extraordinary meeting today
- The UN Human Rights Council is holding an urgent debate on Ukraine
- Referring to the Kremlin, Vassily Sinaisky, one of the world's most prestigious conductors and artists of Russian origin, who works as the chief conductor of the Janáček Philharmonic in Ostrava, said: “Stop it, the truth is not on your side!”
SLOVAKIA:
- Slovak President has informed that Austria is ready to help Slovakia if the influx of refugees from Ukraine increases.
- Slovak Police has informed that it registered a total of 12,130 people crossing from Ukraine into Slovakia from Wednesday 06.00am to Thursday 6:00am. Of them, 4,207 people were processed from the midnight till Thursday morning. This brings the total number of refugees coming to Slovakia to 79,059 people.
- Still yesterday, the SVK Cabinet approved a regulation to implement some aspects of economic mobilisation due to the mass influx of foreigners to Slovakia as a result of the Ukraine conflict.
- President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is expected to meet Prime Minister E. Heger in Slovakia today for talks on the situation in Ukraine before meeting Slovak President Z. Čaputová
- There was no change in the radiation situation and no increase in the radiation levels in Ukraine or Slovakia, Chair of the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority M. Žiaková confirmed.
- The National Security Office blocked the Headline News website on Wednesday. Harmful activity on the website was detected under the Cyber Security Act.
