Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď welcomed Polish Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak to the Ministry of Defence in a full military honours ceremony today (29 April 2022). As well as discussing bilateral defence cooperation, they singled out the challenges of the ongoing security situation in the Eastern Europe region in the wake of Russia's belligerence against Ukraine as the central theme of the meeting.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak and I reassured each other that our perception of the geopolitics and security situation in our region and in Ukraine was absolutely identical. We’re fully aware of who the aggressor is and that we must do everything in our strength to help Ukraine, which is fighting for the future of the whole of Europe.”
No sooner will the Slovak Air Force fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets be grounded than Poland will be ready to protect SVK airspace – Slovakia has received confirmation of this from the Polish side. “I’m very pleased that once the legislative measures which we are going to start working on immediately have been put in place, Poland will be looking after the security of our airspace until the ordered F-16 fighter jects arrive in Slovakia from the USA,” said Minister Naď, noting that the primary aim is to have Polish aircraft operating out of a Polish base. Thanks to its proximity to Slovakia, this solution has a geographical advantage.
Furthermore, the defence ministers concurred that bilateral defence and security cooperation between both countries is highly intense. In addition to this, they highlighted an equally very high level of collaborative efforts within V4 and NATO structures. In analysing opportunities for further cooperation, the partners identified another possible area of cooperation – the Polish and Slovak defence industries.
