Today (24 May 2022), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď received the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Slovakia, Her Excellency Ms Lorea Arribalzaga Ceballos along with Spain's non-resident Defence Attaché to Slovakia, Col Miguel Golmayo Fernandéz at MOD Main Building in Bratislava.
At the meeting, Minister Naď and Ambassador Ceballos had a full discussion about SVK-ESP defence and security cooperation. Additionally, they talked about the ongoing security developments in Ukraine and international aid for the defending country. In the context of international cooperation, they discussed the agenda of the upcoming NATO Summit in Madrid.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The situation in Ukraine leaves us in no doubt about the importance of collective security and cooperation. The values that form the bedrock of the Alliance and the European Union are bringing states closer together, as evidenced by other countriesʼ interest in pursuing membership in these structures.” He went on to emphasise that the purposeful cooperation between NATO and the EU benefits both sides, Slovakia and Spain alike.
To deepen SVK-ESP defence cooperation, the strengthening of ties between the NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence (NATO EOD COE) Trenčín and the Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Centre of Excellence (C-IED COE) Madrid was a subject of discussion too, as was the issue of training and education for service personnel. On the latter, for example, a live chemical warfare agents (CWA) training course at the CBRN training facility Zemianske Kostoľany was offered to the Spanish Armed Forces.
