A wildfire breaks out in the Levoča Hills despite a temporary public ban on access to local military woodlands

Despite a ban in place on public access to MOD woodlands in the Levoča Hills due to the prevailing dryness and a high risk of fires, a wildfire in the location of Stará Ľubovňa was spotted by foresters on Monday afternoon (18 July 2022). Half a hectare of woodlands had burnt due to the careless action of incidental visitors before the wildfire was contained.

In response to the request from Military Forests and Estates (MOD Forestry Department), the county offices covering the area of the former Javorina Military District have put a temporary ban in place on public access to local military woodlands due to a lack of rain, high temperatures and extreme dryness. The risk of a wildfire remains very high.

Because dry and hot weather will hold out over the coming days, the MOD has joined forces with its Forestry Department to alert the public of an imminent danger of wildfires and call on them to act responsibly in line with forest fire safety guidance.
