Ministry of Defence pays tribute to the memory of political prisoners in a ceremony at the walls of Leopoldov Prison

In a remembrance ceremony at the walls of Leopoldov Prison today (20 August 2022), Secretary General of the MOD's Service Office Peter Kozák paid tribute to the memory of the political prisoners who were imprisoned unjustly and unlawfully by the Communist regime.

Speaking at the Memorial Plaque dedicated to Slovakia's political prisoners  at Leopoldov Prison, Peter Kozák expressed his sympathies to all those whose lives were affected by the Communist regime's cruel crackdown on freedom and democracy, saying: “We must not forget that the totalitarian regime would destroy what was most precious – human lives. This act of remembrance is a mark of respect for all those who were persecuted, tortured and imprisoned unjustly and unlawfully. So, letʼs be careful to protect our values and disallow the return of the regime that has the blood of innocent victims on its hands.”

Over 70,000 people were wrongly convicted of committing political crimes in Slovakia. Between 1948 and 1989, up to 450,000 political prisoners served their prison sentences in what is today's territory of the Slovak and Czech Republics. The August remembrance ceremony at the walls of Slovakia's oldest prison has been organised by the Slovak Political Prisoners Confederation since 2009.
