French partisans who died in the Slovak National Uprising remembered at the French Partisans Memorial on Zvonica Hill

To mark the upcoming 78th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), Secretary General of the MOD's Service Office Peter Kozák attended a commemoration at the French Partisans Memorial on Zvonica Hill near Strečno, to pay tribute and give thanks to the sacrifice of the French partisans who died in the SNP in WW2.

Speaking at the Memorial, Peter Kozák said: “It is with gratitude that we remember the courage of all the Resistance fighters who played a role in defeating the Nazis. In this respect, the deeds of the French partisans are highly admirable. Still before the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, on 28 August 1944, they managed to take the railway station and the post office in Vrútky and to block the railway tunnels in the Strečno Pass, which were of strategic importance to the Wehrmacht. May the bravery of these proud sons of France live on in the hearts and minds of the Slovak people.”

The French partisans took part in the battle to take the village of Janova Lehota. They also operated in the area of Dobrá Niva, guarding the roads in the direction of the Slovak-Hungarian border. Elsewhere, four French platoons were deployed to Krupina and one to Prenčov. As well as seeing action against the Nazis at Senohrad, they also operated on the north side of the Low Tatra Mountains and in the Small Fatra Mountains.

56 French partisans rest in peace in the crypts below the French Partisans Memorial on Zvonica Hill. Others are buried in the partisan cemetery in Priekopa and other cemeteries in different corners of Slovakia.
