SNP 78th Anniversary Commemorations: Minister Naď recognises the outstanding acts of heroism by the SNP heroes

Representatives of the Ministry of Defence, led by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, State Secretary Marian Majer and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko along with Slovakia's highest constitutional representatives attended the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) 78th Anniversary Commemorations in Banská Bystrica today (29 August 2022). The event opened with a Slovak Air Force flypast.

Jaroslav Naď said: “It was only down to the incredible displays of heroism by the SNP fighters who stood up to all forms and expressions of Nazism and fascism that Slovakia earned its place amongst the developed democratic forces of the anti-Hitler coalition. We owe them our deepest respect and gratitude, since we would have no future without their enormous heroism, sacrifice and suffering.”

Minister Naď made clear that the SNP operations would have been impossible without the political, military and materiel support of Allies. “Therefore, it is our moral and human duty to help the Ukrainian people defend their countryʼs territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence against the Russian aggressor,” he said.

Director of the SNP Museum Marian Uhrin said: “We pledge to never forget the Resistance fighters who fought in the Slovak National Uprising, their individual sacrifices and bravery, the sacrifices of their families and those of our entire Nation. Today, we remember the SNP itself, the insurgents who laid down their lives, and the victims of Nazi reprisals. Today, we also remember those insurgents who are no longer with us, and we salute the surviving ones who are still here with us.”

1st Czechoslovak Army in Slovakia Command's Headquarters was based in Banská Bystrica. The primary mission of the Command was to defend the Resistance territory with a population of 1.7m inhabitants and a size of 20,000 square kilometres until the Soviet Red Army's arrival. By the second month of the uprising, the Resistance forces had reached a strength of 77,500. Despite the SNP's military defeat in October 1944, there was no total destruction to the Resistance forces, no surrender, and no end to the Resistance, which continued well until Slovakia's complete liberation on 3 May 1945.

The 78th SNP anniversary was also celebrated by the MOD at the Freedom Memorial at the Dargov Pass in the Slanské Hills, where Director of the Legislation and Law Department Daniel Bednár paid tribute to the Resistance heroes, saying: “The Dargov Pass has a special place in the SNP commemorations. It is one of the battlefields with the highest number of casualties in Slovakia – the fighting here claimed an incredible 22,000 human lives.” Bednár went on to remind that thanks to the SNP heroes, today we can live in a sovereign, democratic state governed by the rule of law and develop the legacy of our predecessors.
