DUKLA Military Sports Centre rewrites its medal record books yet again and gives out awards to its most successful sportspeople of the year

The Slovak Ministry of Defence and the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Banská Bystrica have recognised the successes of their top Sportsmen and Sportswomen this year too. The most successful male and female athletes in 2022 were announced and presented accolades during the Slovak Armed Forces Sports Awards Ceremony hosted at the Banská Bystrica State Opera House today. Once again, skier Petra Vlhová is the Sportswoman of the Year.

Among the distinguished guests who attended in person were Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and State Secretary Marian Majer. Jaroslav Naď handed the Sportswoman of the Year Award over to Petra Vlhová with words of thanks, saying: “Thanks to Petra, the Slovak national flag can be seen flying at the worldʼs top sporting events. Her achievements and the successes of all Armed Forces athletes are spreading the good name of the Slovak Ministry of Defence and Slovakia in the entire world – we are proud that they are part of our team.” He went on to reaffirm the MOD's continued support and commitment to further developing and advancing all the sporting disciplines in the Armed Forces.

The DUKLA Military Sports Centre Banská Bystrica has recorded another excellent and successful year, with its male and female athletes taking home 64 medals from the world's top sporting events – meaning DUKLA's medal record books have had to be rewritten yet again. Ultimately, it is down to Petra Vlhová's success that DUKLA now has the most precious medal – an Olympic gold.

Director of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Banská Bystrica Lt Col Matej Tóth said: “I am proud of our sportspeople. Their performances have brought a lot of beautiful emotions and have delighted the whole of Slovakia. However, their performances would have not been such a success without the corresponding training conditions. Largely thanks to the MODʼs support and investment in infrastructure and equipment, our athletes can be training at the worldʼs top level at our modern sports centre. I am pleased to see they have got the best out of the conditions and have achieved outstanding results throughout this year.”

Of the 62 nominees, DUKLA's top 10 athletes in 2022 are: Petra Vlhová (skiing), Alexander Slafkovský (canoe slalom), Tajmuraz Salkazanov (wrestling), Patrik Jány (sporting shooting), Boris Makoev (wrestling), Jakub Grigar (canoe slalom), Eliška Mintálová (canoe slalom), Paulína Bátovská Fialková (biathlon), Monika Chochlíková (kickboxing/Muay Thai) and Juraj Tužinský (sporting shooting).

The Best Junior Athlete of the Year is Eliška Mintálová (canoe slalom), followed by Vladimír Macura (weightlifting) and Benjamín Maťašeje (judo) in the second and third places. The Best Coach of the Year Award went to Erik Cap (wrestling).

Also scheduled on the official programme was the DUKLA Sports Hall of Fame 2022 Induction Ceremony, where one Slovak coach and three sporting legends – Juraj Sanitra, Slavomír Kňazovický, Jozef Gönci and Anastasiya Kuzmina – were officially inducted into the Dukla Sports Hall of Fame.
