Speaking at FAC (DEF) in Brussels, State Secretary Majer said: Slovakia appreciates the EU's united position in the interests of defending our common values

State Secretary Marian Majer attended the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) in Brussels today. EU Defence Ministers consulted closely on the security developments in Ukraine, the situation in Africa's Sahel region, and the EU's rapid deployment options in response to immediate threats and crisis scenarios. Also present at some of the discussions was NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in person, while Ukrainian Defence Minister Olexii Reznikov joined in via video link.

Speaking at the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence), State Secretary Majer said: “As an EU and NATO member, Slovakia very much appreciates the measures both organisations have put in place under the unprecedented circumstances, as well as their ability to take a firm position in the interests of defending our common values. Although Russiaʼs aggression against Ukraine has deeply struck the international community, we have remained united and adopted a range of bilateral and multilateral initiatives, offering our continued and strengthened support to our Ukrainian friends.”

Appreciative of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine), launched at this week's meeting in Brussels, State Secretary Majer had this to say: “Even though this idea may have seemed ambitious at the beginning when it was in its early days, it has been successfully implemented thanks to a common goal of providing gratuitous assistance to Ukraine.”

On strengthening the European bloc's security, the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) discussed the EU Rapid Deployment Capacity (EU RDC), one of the key deliverables of the Strategic Compass (adopted in March 2022), which is set to reach full operational capability (FOC) in 2025.

On joint procurement, EU Defence Ministers focused on ways to decrease the costs of procurement, operation and maintenance of capabilities and on how to replace outdated military equipment in order to ensure compatibility and interoperability across the Member States armed forces.

In the margins of the meeting, EU Defence Ministers signed a new EDA programme on cyber defence titled the Military Computer Emergency Response Team Operational Network (MICNET). This initiative establishes a network of Military Computer Emergency Response Teams (MILCERTs) to deal with computer security incidents in the EU's cyber domain.
