The Federal Republic of Germany is to provide Slovakia with two modern MANTIS C-RAM Air Defence Systems to boost Slovak air defences on its eastern border with Ukraine, secured by Slovak armed forces and assets.
As has been confirmed by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, Slovakia is to get the MANTIS systems for free and permanently, based on the SVK-DEU correct relationship, expert talks, and NATO's common goal – to strengthen and protect NATO's Eastern Flank that we are part of.
Each of the two MANTIS systems consists of up to eight automatic weapon stations (the exact number of the weapon stations to arrive in Slovakia will be released as and when the information becomes available in the coming weeks), two radars, and a command post. The package from Germany also includes a surveillance radar with a range of up to 100km and specialist training of Slovak operators on the equipment.
The Modular, Automatic and Network Capable Targeting and Interception System (MANTIS) Counter-Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) system is a stationary, fully automated weapon station designed to keep up round-the-clock air defence cover for ground installations such as military bases, defending against the effects of incoming cruise missiles, rockets, artillery and mortar shells, and drones.
Germany originally developed MANTIS to protect the bases where Bundeswehr troops were until recently stationed in Afghanistan. Germany's statement of intent to provide the MANTIS systems to Slovakia was first released by the Slovak and German defence leaders during German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht's official visit to Bratislava in December 2022.
