There have been attempts to spread malicious disinformation on alleged preparation of SVK military personnel's involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, whereas the conspirators are misusing an official online document to present a false interpretation of the situation, the Ministry of Defence has reported.
The draft document titled “Deployment of SVK Military Personnel in Support of the European Union Assistance Mission Ukraine” is, indeed, about SVK service personnel joining the EUMAM UA training mission, but not in Ukraine. However, some individuals, motivated on different grounds, are trying to present the issue as the SVK operational deployment to Ukraine. But there is absolutely no truth in that.
As early as 22 December 2022, the MOD released information on this EU mission and has ever since issued regular updates, for example, on the number of Ukrainian citizens who underwent the basic military training programme for Ukrainian forces in Slovakia in 2022 (MOD press release dated 22 Feb 2023).
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “I am fundamentally opposed to the misuse of real patriots – Slovak Armed Forces service members for furtherance of clearly anti-state interests such as the disruption of society or mistrust in the decisions of the state. We are not talking about peanuts here, but rather about the security of the Slovak Republic and our international reputation as a responsible partner and ally.”
The EU announced the establishment of EUMAM UA to train Ukrainian forces for combat to defend themselves against Russia's aggression in the autumn of 2022. Importantly, this training programme has been underway across EU territory, not in Ukraine.
State Secretary Marian Majer said: “Slovakia declared its participation in the training programme and hence in the training mission back then and repeatedly ever since, so there is no new news to share. Towards this end, a mandate had to be approved by the Government and Parliament, which is linked to this shared document. So, this is no secret operation or anything of that kind, but only a legislative procedure in line with our previous statements.”
