The nation-wide finals of the SVK Floorball League culminated in Košice today (18 June 2019). For the first time, the competition was joined by 240 members of the Slovak Armed Forces in order to encourage the nation’s youth to do sports, live a healthy lifestyle and stir up their interest in military jobs. As part of today’s finals, there were close quarters combat (CQC) demonstrations by soldiers and civil defence activities for primary school pupils and students. They could see military equipment and vehicles on display, including those used by the SVK Military Police.
Speaking at the finals, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “A lot of time and attention must be devoted to the nation’s youth and students, and this is not only the case of those attending secondary and tertiary schools, because it is often too late. That is why a year ago we made a decision to support the Floorball League project, which is aimed at primary school pupils and students, so our soldiers can start cooperating with them in the field that connects them and that is sports and physical fitness.” As he further underlined, thanks to getting soldiers involved in the SVK Floorball League, they have brought military jobs in the Slovak Armed Forces closer to their attention, as well as promoting movement, health, competiveness and fair play.
Vladimír Fatika, administrator of the TV JOJ Foundation and the competition organizer, has given a positive assessment of the 1st SVK Floorball League. “We are pleased that, thanks to integrating the soldiers’ matches between the pupils’ matches, we have brought together the target groups,” he said, adding that he has received positive feedback on service personnel from both pupils and teachers.
The SVK Floorball League project was joined by a total of 100,000 pupils and students divided into 570 teams from primary schools and 127 teams from secondary schools. A total of 285 female teams participated in the competition. The Armed Forces were represented by 20 teams who competed in the regional tournaments in Banská Bystrica, Galanta and Prešov.
