Defence Ministers Gajdoš and Metnar pay homage to the heroes of Carpatho-Dukla Operation

SVK Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš along with CZE Defence Minister Lubomír Metnar paid homage to the heroes who died in one of the bloodiest operations of WW2 in Slovakia. Commemorative events marking the 75th anniversary of Carpatho-Dukla Operation were held at the Czechoslovak Soldiers Memorial at the Dukla Pass and at two other places of commemoration in Svidník, with the participation of Slovakia’s three highest constitutional representatives.

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “Carpatho-Dukla Operation stands out as an example of our nation’s indomitable pride and resolve to fight against Nazi oppression, while at the same time being a permanent warning signal against the dangers which lurk in the forms of extremism, racism and xenophobia even today.” On this occasion, Minister Gajdoš awarded commemorative medals to war veterans as well as to Svidník as a town.

While paying tribute to the heroes of Carpatho-Dukla Operation in Svidník, both ministers took part in wreath-laying ceremonies at the Army General L. Svoboda Statue (Army General Svoboda served as Commander of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps) and at the Soviet Army Memorial.
