Minister J. Naď: Day 1 of testing gets top A* grade

The latest data for yesterday’s Day 1 of country-wide testing for COVID-19 shows the public’s enormous interest in testing. Testing Day 1 of the biggest logistical operation in the history of Slovakia, codenamed Op Shared Responsibility, saw 2,581,113 people tested, of which 25,850 tested positive, equating to 1% of all those tested.

Speaking at a testing site in Bratislava’s Petržalka today, Prime Minister Igor Matovič was joined by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, Interior Minister Roman Mikulec and Health Minister Marek Krajčí and Defence State Secretary Marian Majer in thanking all those involved in testing for their full commitment to the operation and people for their sense of responsibility and discipline on Day 1 of across-the-board testing in Slovakia.

Prime Minister Igor Matovič said: “I must confess that when I learned the total number of all people tested late at night yesterday it took my breath away. It is proof that the Slovak Republic, as a community of responsible people, is functioning. Despite different attempts, all the talk and doubts, over the past 17 days the Slovak Armed Forces have organised and been part of the biggest operation in Slovakia ever since its establishment.”

In addition, Prime Minister Igor Matovič underscored that, with all the assistance and commitment of service members, self-governing authorities, medical professionals, police officers, firefighters, emergency workers, thousands of volunteers and those taking part in the operation, “we’ve issued ourselves a certificate attesting to the fact that the Slovak Republic is functioning as a State, that throughout this difficult time we have not run away from the battlefield, and that we have not left the sinking ship, but with all our strength together we have done the utmost to rescue her.”

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď along with Defence State Secretary Marian Majer expressed their immense respect and gratitude for all personnel involved in testing and for those getting tested from early morning to late evening, whilst demonstrating kindness, politeness and friendliness. “It is with immense pride and gratitude towards all parties involved, led by the Slovak Armed Forces, and despite some small difficulties that occurred yesterday, I can say that Day 1 of our testing gets the top A* grade,” emphasised the Defence Minister. He urged those who have not come for a swab test yet to do so today, as the situation at the testing sites is calm and testing is underway smoothly across most of Slovakia.

The Defence Minister added that yesterday’s total figure is a big surprise to him and if somebody had told him such estimate on Friday he would not have believed it. “I’m overwhelmed not only because people were great and came in high numbers, but also because those who tested them coped with working under strain and worked very thoroughly.” Speaking of logistics, he appreciated that the military has been running the operation very well, although material has had to be moved promptly around several sites.

As at 09:00 on Saturday, 98% of all testing sites were operational, equating to 4,782 sites. Given that entire villages had been tested by Friday at 100% and some at more than 100% (non-residents included), local testing teams were moved to other sites wherever needed. Currently, 40,463 personnel, of which 6,319 are soldiers and 14,500 health workers, are involved in the operation today.

Interior Minister Roman Mikulec said: “I must admit I was pleasantly surprised at the figure and I didn’t expect it. For this, I’d like to thank all SVK citizens for coming to get tested for COVID-19. My sincere thanks go out to all members of the Police Corps, the Fire and Rescue Corps, the Mountain Rescue Service, volunteers from the Interior Ministry and its subordinate elements as well as to the Armed Forces for their outstanding work. I take my hat off to all those supporting this operation.”

Interior Minister Roman Mikulec noted that members of the Police Corps have recorded only a few minor incidents without any major security incident. “During the testing phase, people have behaved respectfully and acted with a sense of responsibility, without causing any troubles. I hope this will continue so for the rest of today,” he said, extending his thanks to all mayors, rescuers, medical professionals, volunteers – all those who have participated in the operation. “They deserve our huge thank you and respect,” he added.

Health Minister Marek Krajčí said: “The Slovak Republic finds itself in an immensely serious, even epidemiologically critical situation. Given the enormous spike in COVID-19 cases, in a few weeks’ time we could be faced with a total collapse of hospitals, a total collapse of health care services across our country.” According to him, many concluded that the only solution to this situation was a complete lockdown of the country, whilst keeping the basic infrastructure running. “Yet, our government has come up with a solution and I must say that, after yesterday’s testing, it is clear that it works,” he said, expressing great respect and gratitude to health workers for supporting the government and for signing up to test in high numbers.

Labour, Social Affairs and Family Minister Milan Krajniak compared the current developments in Slovakia to the Slovak National Uprising in WW2. “I’m immensely proud of our whole Nation and of other nationalities living in Slovakia that we’ve decided to put up active resistance to the pandemic,” he highlighted.
