In line with the recommendation of the Minister of Defence, Cabinet ministers discussed the SVK Defence Strategy – a principal strategic document which was last updated by Parliament 15 years ago, and a number of other proposals by the Ministry of Defence. All proposals tabled by the Minister of Defence were approved in today's Cabinet session.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The SVK Defence Strategy is a fundamental strategic document which sets out Slovakia's basic approaches to the provision of its defence. As well as building on the new SVK Security Strategy, it defines specific and up-to-date defence policy premises and presents the goals, ways and instruments for its implementation.” He thanked the other ministries, political leaders and the wider security community, including representatives of academia and the SVK defence industry, for engaging together on the strategic document. This now needs to be voted on by Parliament.
Cabinet ministers also discussed another two proposals by the MOD. On EUFOR Op Althea, one of them was the proposal to increase the number of SVK military personnel deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina and to set aside SVK troops for the out-of-country Immediate Reserve Force (IRF). With an uplift of up to 60 military personnel for EUFOR Op Althea and by setting aside 160 soldiers for the IRF from February 2021 onwards, Slovakia will support the continuity of Op Althea, which is experiencing shortages of military personnel after the UK's withdrawal from the European Union.
To support military exercises, the Cabinet agreed with the presence of international troops in Slovakia and the deployments of SVK troops abroad for the purposes of training events in the first half of 2021. Commenting on this, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Military exercises are one of the basic instruments for uplifting the readiness of the Slovak Armed Forces. Therefore, I want to emphasise that this is about the presence and deployments of soldiers solely for the purposes of joint military exercises, which are conducted every year.”
Still today, the Cabinet also agreed with the last proposal tabled by the Minister of Defence – the announcement of promotions and appointments for selected military personnel. As part of the proposal, five colonels will be promoted to Brigadier, two Brigadiers to Major General, and one Major General to Lieutenant General. On the recommendation of the Minister of Defence, the proposal for promotions and appointments of senior military personnel is submitted by the Government to the President of the Slovak Republic.
