Austrian Chief of Defence Staff Gen Robert Brieger arrives in Slovakia

At the invitation of Slovak Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko, Austrian Chief of the Defence Staff Gen Robert Brieger arrived on a two-day visit to Slovakia today (5 May 2021). As part of his conversations with Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Chief of Defence Gen Zemko, particular attention was paid to current security and defence issues as well as to building EU security and defence collaboration.
Minister Naď thanked Gen Brieger for last year's 33-member Austrian Army deployment in support of Slovakia's nation-wide mass testing for COVID-19 as part of Op Shared Responsibility, saying: “Austria's rapid response to Slovakia's request for deployment of personnel during the largest civil-military logistics operation in our history is an excellent example of our successful bilateral engagement.” Mr Naď also praised the joint activities being undertaken under the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC).
During his meeting with the AUT Chief of the Defence Staff, the SVK Chief of Defence stressed the importance of Armed Forces development, he said: “Our discussion pointed to the further possibilities of advancing joint solutions to defence and security issues. The participation of Austrian troops in military exercises such as the regular “Toxic Valley” exercise for CBRN specialists in Zemianske Kostoľany and the ongoing “Black Swan 2021” exercise in Hungary provides a solid foundation for taking the development of both armed forces to the next level.”
During his visit to Slovakia, Austrian Chief of the Defence Staff Gen Robert Brieger will meet with Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Juraj Krúpa. Day 2 of his visit will be dedicated to a series of meetings and a tour of the Training Centre Lešť where he will view a display of military equipment in service with the SVK Armed Forces units.
