Over 11,000 SVK Armed Forces personnel have served under the United Nations (UN) flag since the establishment of the Slovak Republic on 1 January 1993. Today, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď congratulated them on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
On UN peace support operations (PSOs), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “Each mission has its own specifics, yet all of them pursue the same goals – to minimise human suffering and to create conditions necessary for the functioning of local institutions. In this way, our servicemen and women have been helping for the past 28 years already throughout the world. To leave the loved ones in order to help those who are most vulnerable and to share their experience and knowledge with those who need it takes a lot of courage and determination.“
On Slovakia's commendable track record on UN PSOs, Chief of Defence Daniel Zmeko said: “Maintaining peace in the world under the UN flag is an important pillar of international crisis management operations to which we have contributed with our deployments. Indeed, this is one of our longest deployments abroad, as SVK military personnel began to perform duties in the former Yugoslavia almost immediately after the foundation of the Slovak Republic.“
Since its establishment, Slovakia has supported 16 UN PSOs to date. Currently, 240 SVK servicemen and women are deployed with UNFICYP in Cyprus and with UNTSO on the Golan Heights.
The United Nations was established in 1945. As of today, it has 193 Member States. The UN peace support operations are focused on the prevention of conflict and its spillover beyond one's borders, conflict stabilisation, support to parties seeking peace, and efforts towards concluding peace agreements.
