Slovak military professionals reap successes at international sporting events

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko welcomed Capt Sylvia Šebestian and SSgt Tomáš Marcinek to the Ministry of Defence to recognise their achievements amid fierce competition at international sporting events.
Capt Sylvia Šebestian, member of the Slovak Special Operations Forces, placed 7th in the women's category from among over 170 female runners at the Košice City Marathon and claimed the 6th Slovak Female Marathon Champion title. “As a servicewoman, I view body movement as an integral part of my life. I am delighted to be able to represent the Armed Force in this way and I hope more victories will follow,” said Capt Sylvia Šebestian.
The other recognised soldier was SSgt Tomáš Marcinek, specialist of the Parachute, Airborne and Rescue Service, who placed 3rd in the accuracy landing category at the 2021 FAI World Parachuting Championships in Russia. “Parachuting is not only my job in the armed forces, but it is my passion in my free time, which is why I am already getting ready for another big challenge – the World Military Parachuting Championships,” said SSgt Tomáš Marcinek, who is an 8-time Slovak Parachuting Champion and who holds the Slovak accuracy landing record.
“Our servicemen and women excel not only at what they do on duty at home and abroad, but also amid fierce competition at different international events. This is the outcome of their specific precision training and zest for getting things done better, even at the cost of their free time. I take my hat off to them, I am proud of them, and I thank them for representing the Armed Forces and Slovakia so well," said Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď.
Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko praised the soldiers for their enthusiasm to keep advancing forward and to share their experience and expertise with other members of the Slovak Armed Forces. “It gave me great pleasure to express my support for them and thank them in person. I hope we will meet again on a similar occasion. I keep my fingers crossed for them,” said Gen Zmeko.
