Ministry of Defence to clean its roads and pavements in greener way

As the Ministry of Defence delivers on the Green MOD Concept, its latest contribution to encouraging more environmentally friendly operations across Defence is a new road sweeper. The electric vehicle is to replace an obsolete road sweeper with high levels of operating costs, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions.

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “To some, the concept for a greener Ministry of Defence may look like an oxymoron, and though the vision for fielding eco-friendly combat equipment may still be the “music of the future”, we are looking to contribute towards environmental protection through a raft of projects and initiatives.”

Compared to the road sweeper powered by fossil fuel, Director General of the MOD's Property and Infrastructure Department Ján Bučan noted that the new fully electric road sweeper offers low noise levels, zero emissions, and a two-third reduction in operating costs. “The electric road sweeper is capable of operating uninterruptedly for over 7 hours. It is also suitable for cleaning large surfaces such as airport aprons and car parks,” he explained.

As part of the Green MOD Concept, the MOD has prepared 18 initiatives with a focus on areas such as energy efficiency, recycling, waste management, process digitalisation, digital editions instead of printed materials, green purchasing, and environmentally friendly transport.
