Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď welcomed Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb to the Slovak Ministry of Defence today (29 March 2022). Central themes of the meeting included the current security developments in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the bolstering of NATO's Eastern Flank. Both leaders also discussed Slovak-Indiana cooperation and ties, in particular ways to deepen collaborative opportunities between the Slovak Republic and the State of Indiana.
Defence Minister Naď affirmed Slovak appreciation for the U.S. commitment to Eastern Europe, saying: “We very much value the U.S. contribution to NATO’s multinational enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup which is being stood up in Slovakia and the resolve of the U.S. side to strengthen the Alliance’s Eastern Flank.“
Regarding the SVK-U.S. bilateral defence relationship, the head of the MOD complimented U.S. assistance to the Slovak military, to include the training and education of SVK Armed Forces personnel, as well as the materiel aid and advisory services delivered via different U.S.-sponsored programmes and initiatives. At the same time, he underscored the Indiana National Guard's long-standing support of the Slovak Armed Forces' transformation process.
Speaking of the Slovak-U.S. partnership, Defence Minister Naď said: “We see the United States as our strategic partner and we are looking to solidify our relationship at the bilateral level, as well as within the Alliance. Of course, this involves enhancing our bilateral cooperation with the Indiana National Guard, which has a long-established history with an excellent, high level of collaboration. That’s why Slovakia’s priority remains to continue this close engagement.”
Furthermore, both sides identified possible avenues of cooperation to be taken forward, including Indiana's humanitarian support for the Ukrainian refugees who have found refuge in Slovakia or specialist courses and seminars for Slovak professionals, with focus on radio communications and the capabilities required in securing Slovakia's eastern border.
